About Herndon Optimist Youth Baseball (HOYB)

Our leagues are safe, fun and very instructional. No experience necessary!  If your child has never played before or if your child is a "seasoned vet", baseball in Herndon has lots to offer.

Tryouts & Draft
All players who desire to play in the Majors 50/70, 46/65, Minors, or Farm Leagues must try out.  The purpose of tryouts is to provide an equal distribution of the players based on skill level.  Players will be assigned to a team through a draft process.  Children will try out by age group and slotted into leagues.  Our goal is to have the right level of players in the right leagues so that everyone plays competitively with their peers. We attempt to group Machine Pitch, Coach Pitch, and T-Ball teams by school regions and neighborhood so the children can play with kids they probably already know.

50/70 Baseball for the 2014 Season
HOYB is excited to continue this great opportunity for our players.

This league will be comprised of 4 teams of 12 players each who will play on large field design. Currently all HOYB competitive leagues play on a 46/65 field design. The 50/70 convertible field will move the pitching mound back 4 feet and the base paths will be 5 feet longer. Base runners will learn to take leads and the pitchers will learn to hold runners.

This conversion is recommended by Babe Ruth Baseball as it helps develop players and ease the transition to the 90’ field that they will compete on in Babe Ruth baseball.

The Majors 50/70 League will also allow players to compete within the League during the week and on the weekends there will be opportunities to compete against other 50/70 Leagues in the Cal Ripken League. There will be some travel involved that will be between from 30 to 40 minutes.  Weekday games for the Majors 50/70 League will still comply to HOYB weekday rules. Saturday games will be 6 innings long and will have a 2 hour 15 minute drop dead time.

Players age 11 -12 who are interested in playing in this new League are encouraged to try out. The 50/70 coaches and board members will evaluate all the players and select the 48 players that demonstrate arm strength and baseball skill to play at this level and make them eligible for the draft. The Majors 46/65 League will remain a very competitive option for many of our players who are still looking for competitive ball but may not be ready for the larger 50/70 field configuration.
