Spring 2008
Registration is now closed
We welcome all youth aged
4 to
12 (as of April 30, 2008), living in or around the Herndon, Virginia
area to play in the Herndon Optimist Cal Ripken Youth Baseball
League. Our leagues are safe, fun and very instructional. No experience
necessary! If your child has never played before or if your child is
a "seasoned vet", baseball in Herndon has lots to offer.
Tryouts & Draft
All players who desire to play in the Majors, Minors or Rookie
Leagues must tryout. The purpose of tryouts is to provide an
equal distribution of the players based on skill level.
Players will be assigned to a team through a draft process.
Please make sure to select your league preference for your child;
however, there is no guarantee your child will be drafted at that
level.
We attempt to group Machine Pitch, Coach Pitch,
and T-Ball teams by school regions and neighborhood so the children can play with
kids they probably already know.
Important Dates
Regular Spring Registration ends on February 24. After this
date there is a $25 late registration fee incurred. The Spring
Season begins with practices on March 17, and
ends June 14.

50/70 Baseball
for the 2008 Season
HOYB
is excited to announce a new opportunity for our players. For the
Spring 2008 season HOYB is planning to convert our Majors American
division to Majors 50/70. This new
league will be comprised of 4 teams of 11 players each who will play
on large field design. Currently all HOYB competitive leagues play
on a 46/60 field design. The new 50/70 convertible field will move
the pitching mound back 4 feet and the base paths will be 10 feet
longer. Base runners will learn to take leads and the pitchers
will learn to hold runners.
This conversion is recommended by
Babe Ruth
Baseball as it helps develop players and ease the transition to
the 90’ field that they will compete on in Babe Ruth baseball.
The Majors 50/70 League will also allow players to
compete within the League during the week and on the weekends there
will be opportunities to compete against other 50/70 Leagues in the
Cal Ripken League. There will be some travel involved that will be
between from 30 to 40 minutes. Weekday games for the Majors
50/70 League will still comply to HOYB weekday rules. Saturday games
will be 6 innings long and will have a 2 hour 15 minute drop dead
time.
Players age 10 -12 who are interested in playing
in this new League are encouraged to try out. The 50/70 coaches and
board members will evaluate all the players and select the 44
players that demonstrate arm strength and baseball skill to play at
this level and make them eligible for the draft. The Majors 46/60
League will remain a very competitive option for many of our players
who are still looking for competitive ball but may not be ready for
the larger 50/70 field configuration.
HOYB is working with the Town of Herndon to
convert Bready Park and Haley Smith into 50/70 convertible fields.
This will allow HOYB to play both 46/60 leagues and 50/70 league
games on these fields. The weekday game night will be determined
soon, once we receive confirmation that the field changes are
complete.
Umpires and coaches will receive additional
training in order to work at the new 50/70 level.
Babe Ruth/Ripken Coaching
Certification Program
Beginning
with the 2008 spring season there is a
Babe Ruth
League/Ripken Baseball Coaching Certification Program in place.
All rostered managers and coaches must complete the Level 1 online
training.
Please contact J.D.
Anderson who will set you up with an account for you to complete
the online training. HOYB is purchasing bulk enrolment so that you
do not have to pay the $19.95 training fee. All coaches
must complete the training by the date that practices begin — March
17, 2008.
