Spring 2002 Season Complete

The 4th seeded Orioles stunned the league, rolling through
the Major League Championship tournament
in surprisingly convincing fashion.
Taking their first round game 11-0 vs. the 5th seeded Dodgers, they
next faced the regular season champion Angels and prevailed in an
exciting 5-3 ball game. In the Championship game against their
regular season's most difficult opponent, the Orioles defeated the
Rockies 6-0 behind the dominant pitching of Ian Martin and
Robbie Smith (combined 12 KOs), outstanding defense (the O's
third straight game without an error) and impressive offense (an
astonishing 21 batters safely reached base). The Orioles players put
in tremendous effort during the season, including attending an extra
batting practice every week, and in the end reaped their just
rewards.
The
Braves beat the Cardinals in the Minor League
Tournament Championship game, by scoring the winning run in the
bottom of the sixth inning. The Braves battled back with 2-outs in
the bottom of the sixth and no runners on base. They preceded to
load the bases and then an infield single scored the winning run
from 3rd base. Congratulations to the Braves and the Cardinals for a
great and exciting game!
The Rookie League Tournament Championship was settled on Thursday with the
Marlins edging the Dodgers by the score of 7-5.
Congratulations to the Marlins and Dodgers for an exciting game!
Major
League Playoffs
The Orioles
soundly defeated the Rockies in the
Major League Tournament Championship game by the score of 6-0.
The Orioles entered the game "loose" and ready to play after being
beaten by the Rockies in their previous 3 meetings this season.
The Orioles stunned everyone by rising from the 4th seed in the
tournament to capture the championship. Key to the Orioles victory
was the contribution of all team members– strong pitching, defense,
hitting and base running proved to make the difference.
Congratulations
to the Rockies for not only rising to the championship game,
but also being the runner-up team during the regular season with an
impressive 11-4 record. The Rockies are the only Major League team
to capture two trophies this season due to their consistently solid
play.
